Today, Mississippi class experienced what it was like to be a Viking. We started off by dressing as Vikings and finding out that Vikings were: sailors, traders, raiders, farmers, settlers and craftsmen. We then looked at different artefacts which helped us to find out how the Vikings navigated and what they fought with. It was then time to go to the Viking village, stopping off to look at part of a Viking longship on the way. When we arrived at the Viking village, we asked permission from the lady of the village to settle. She agreed as long as we worked hard and we did! We made oil lamps out of clay, we ground wheat to make flour for bread, we learned how to protect the village and we collected firewood, learning lots of facts as we worked. After a long day’s work, we had a banquet and then gathered together in the longhouse (the main house in the village) with the lady of the village and compared our lives and houses to those of the Vikings. It was an excellent day and we are now full of historical facts.
