All About Diwali!

Foundation have been learning all about Diwali. We have listened to the story of Rama and Sita and painted Ravana the ten-headed demon. We made collage and cards showing divas (oil lamps) and even investigated a lit candle and learned how to stay safe near candles. We particularly enjoyed tasting chapattis, naan bread and poppadoms and dipping them in raita and mango chutney. Lots of us found we really liked these new flavours! A mandala is a Hindu symbol for the universe and is a circular pattern. We used seeds to make mandalas in play dough and also printed them using sticks and paint brush handles. Outside, we danced to Indian traditional music and made rangoli patterns with chalk and coloured rice. We are beginning to understand that different people celebrate different festivals but many of the ways we celebrate are the same.
