Growing bean plants in Year 2
Michael Sheerin
In Year 2 we planted broad bean seeds in clear plastic cups so we could observe how the seed grows into a mature plant. We put some rolled up paper towels in the cup, poured in a little water and pushed the seed down the side of the cup. We put the bean seed in a dark warm place just as if it was buried in soil. Every few days we took a close look. Watch this video below to see the bean seed grow.
Next we re-potted the plants and put them in the greenhouse. We will water them and continue to observe how they grow.
We have learnt that the start of growth in the seed is called 'Germination'. But what does a seed need for successful germination? We are going to do some experiments to find out.
