Amazon visit to Leeds Grand Mosque

Nicola Sheerin

We really enjoyed our visit to Leeds Grand Mosque. We have been learning about the Muslim faith and the similarities and differences between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It was interesting to find out that actually all 3 faiths are really closely linked as they are all Abrahamic faiths - believing in the same God and lots of the same prophets.

We listened to the call to prayer being sung - it filled the room! We then talked about the 6 beliefs and the 5 pillars of Islam.

We talked about the Hajj and how the Hajjis or pilgrims wear simple white clothes called Ihram. We thought that the Ihram clothing looked just like 2 white towels or sheets - we tried it on and talked about why it was so simple (not even a belt is allowed).

We then found out about the Muslim holy book - the Quran. In the mosque there are lots of Qurans translated into many different languages - there is even one written in braille.

We ended our visit looking at the world map and finding out about clothing from around the world. We tried on clothing from Morocco, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia - this clothing is designed not just to be modest but to help keep you cool in a hot desert climate.

We really enjoyed our visit, we asked lots of good questions and answered questions really thoughtfully. We were respectful and we now have lots of ideas which we can our RE lessons next week!
