WHITE LAITH TREE CHAMPIONS

Yangtze and Foundation 2 rolled up their sleeves today and laid down new roots by planting hundreds of trees in our school grounds to celebrate The Tree Council’s 2019 National Tree Week.
With the help of grants from The Tree Council and The Woodland Trust we purchased hedgerow trees, some apple and pear trees and a feature tree. Despite the freezing weather Yangtze planted 250 hedgerow trees around the edge of the grounds. These will continue our tree trail from the woodland walk right around the grounds and end up at the sensory path.
Foundation 2 planted a dogwood hedge beside the sensory path, the stems of this hedge will be a glorious red colour next Autumn. We hope to take pictures of Foundation next to this hedge when they leave White Laith in Year 6. I wonder if the children or the hedge will have grown and changed the most!
We are now looking forward to planting our very own school orchard later in the week! Watch out for White Laith apple crumble in the future.
The Tree Council awards grants to help communities around the country to plant more trees and do something positive for their treescape. We are one of 55 schools and community groups across the UK that made a successful application for one of this year’s grants.
Sara Lom, CEO, The Tree Council, said: “We simply couldn’t survive without trees. With their incredible carbon-busting, habitat-protecting and wellbeing-boosting power, trees can safeguard a green, healthy and happy future for our children and the planet. To ensure a green, tree-filled future, we need to plant many more trees each year, in the right places, and care for them and the ones we already have. Each of the young people, teachers and community leaders planting as part of National Tree Week are truly Tree Champions, laying down roots for the generations that follow and we’re proud to support them.”
