Viking Rune Bag
Nicola Sheerin
Mississippi have put their sewing skills to the test to create their own rune bags.
Vikings were skilled craftsmen and archaeologists have found evidence of cloth, silk and embroidery - the silk also indicates that they traveled far - we know they were skilled sailors too.
To make our rune bag we first had to create our own design using runes, viking symbols and images of excavated cloth which featured embroidery as our inspiration.
We then drew our design using tailors chalk and used chain stitch - this was tricky. When the design was complete we used pins to hold the front and back together and used over-stitch to sew them together - this was much easier than chain-stitch
We used a double loop of string to create a draw-string fastening and then used Sharpies (not very Viking!) to draw our chosen runes on our pebbles.
